Going to the Races

What have we been up to?  Well, working the races and traveling from the east coast to the west coast.   June kept us busy with 2 more races – first: Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI and second: Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, UT.   We traveled from Pennsylvania, through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and finally California.  Whew!  What a whirlwind!  Of course a lot has happened in that time, which we will tell you about in another post.   But this time, a long ago promise for details and pictures about working at the races is overdue.

Now we sit in San Luis Obispo planning to travel tomorrow to Monterey CA for the round at Laguna Seca.  This event will be shared with World Superbike where we are considered support races for this international organization.  Because of this we will be sharing equipment and have less setup than we normally do.  What is normal?  If such a thing exists (haha)!

As I’ve mentioned before, Jason is the Timing and Scoring manager which means that he is in charge of everything involved with providing scoring and results.   This means computerized monitoring of the motorcycles around the track, providing accurate results and timing information to the teams and the fans.  So my job is to help:  set up, operate the main scoring computer, and tear down.   I also process a lot of the results for reports.   All of this means 12-16 hour days for 5 days – usually Wednesday through Sunday.   Indoor and outdoor setup.   Two others come for 3-4 days and help operate and trouble shoot and so our team of 4 people makes this all happen.   Of course there are many more people that make up the rest of the staff and volunteer crew to put on an event.  And we manage to have some fun times in the midst of the work.   We fondly say we are a part of a traveling circus.    Since pictures are worth a thousand words – here are a bunch to tell the story.
